Blending Board Letter Cards
Quick Answer
Blending Board Letter Cards is an early literacy resource designed to help children practice letter recognition, letter sounds, and phonemic blending. This set includes lowercase and capital letter cards, each paired with a picture cue to reinforce the corresponding sound, plus a strategic letter sequence that helps students begin blending simple words early.
Description
Blending Board Letter Cards gives teachers a simple, hands-on way to support early blending and sound practice.
Each card includes a letter and a picture cue to help children connect the printed letter with its sound. The set includes both lowercase and capital letters so students can practice recognizing and using both forms during early literacy instruction.
The letters are introduced in a specific sequence designed to help students begin blending early. Students can build CVC words by placing consonants at the beginning and end and vowels in the middle. As the teacher, you manage the cards and change one letter at a time, whether it is the beginning, middle, or ending letter, so students can blend new words and even fun nonsense words.
This resource works well during small group instruction, blending board practice, letter-sound review, early reading lessons, intervention, or kindergarten readiness activities.
Whatβs Inside
This resource includes:
Lowercase blending board letter cards
Capital blending board letter cards
Picture cues paired with each letter to reinforce the corresponding sound
A strategic letter introduction sequence
Cards designed for building and blending simple words
We introduce letters in a specific sequence to allow students to start blending early:
C, O, A, D, G, M, L, H, T, I, J, K, P, U, B, R, F, N, E, S, W, Y, V, X, Z, QU
How to Use
Print the letter cards and prepare them for your blending board.
Start with the letters in the provided sequence so students can begin blending simple words as early as possible.
Place consonants at the beginning and end of the word and vowels in the middle to build CVC words.
As the teacher, change one card at a time so students can practice blending a new word. You can change the beginning sound, middle sound, or ending sound to help students hear how the word changes.
Use the cards to build real words and nonsense words so children can practice blending sounds instead of memorizing words.
Prep Tip
Print the cards on cardstock and laminate them if you want to reuse them throughout the year. Store the cards in letter order or by the provided sequence so they are easy to grab during blending board practice.
Physical materials such as cardstock, laminating supplies, storage containers, pocket charts, magnetic boards, or blending boards are not included.
Why It Works
Blending Board Letter Cards help children connect letters, sounds, and word-building in a clear, visual way.
Students are not just naming letters. They are seeing the letter, using the picture cue, saying the sound, and blending sounds together to make words. Changing one letter at a time helps children hear how each sound affects the word.
This resource helps:
Strengthen capital and lowercase letter recognition
Support letter-sound connections
Build early phonemic blending skills
Help students practice CVC word building
Support blending with both real words and nonsense words
Give teachers a clear letter sequence for early blending
Make small group literacy practice more focused and intentional
