Description
Compound Word Cards gives children a simple, visual way to explore how compound words are built.
Each set includes three separate cards. Two cards show the smaller words, such as rain and bow, and the third card shows the new compound word, such as rainbow. Children match Card A, Card B, and Card C to see how the two words come together to create a new word.
This resource works well for literacy centers, small group instruction, matching games, memory-style games, pocket chart activities, or independent practice. It gives children a hands-on way to build vocabulary, notice word parts, and strengthen early literacy understanding.
Whatβs Inside
This resource includes:
24 compound word card sets
3 cards per set
Two smaller word cards for each compound word
One final compound word card for each set
Examples such as rainbow, cupcake, toothbrush, butterfly, and more
Printable card format for matching, sorting, and literacy practice
How to Use
Print the cards on cardstock and cut along the lines.
Introduce a compound word by showing the two smaller word cards first. Say each word aloud, then place them together and show the final compound word card.
Have children match Card A, Card B, and Card C to build each compound word set.
Use the cards during small group instruction, literacy centers, pocket chart work, independent matching, or memory-style games.
You can also place a few sets out at a time so children can focus on matching and building a smaller group of compound words before using the full set.
Prep Tip
Print on cardstock and laminate if you want to reuse the cards throughout the year. Store each compound word set together in a bag, envelope, photo box, or labeled container so the cards stay organized and easy to use.
Physical materials such as cardstock, laminating supplies, bags, envelopes, or storage containers are not included.
Why It Works

By matching the two smaller words to the final compound word, children can see and hear how words work together to create new meaning. This supports vocabulary development, early literacy, and word awareness in a hands-on, developmentally appropriate way.
