Description

Trace, Erase, Try gives children a structured, hands-on way to practice writing letters and numbers.

Each letter and number includes a starting dot and directional guide so students know where to begin and which way to move. The routine is simple: trace the letter or number, erase it by following the same path, and then try writing it on their own.

The erase step is what makes this resource especially useful. Instead of erasing randomly, students practice moving along the same path they used to write the letter or number. This helps reinforce directionality, formation, and muscle memory in a playful way.

Use this resource in dry erase pockets during small group instruction, handwriting practice, morning work, centers, intervention, or at-home practice.

What’s Inside

This resource includes:

  • Trace, Erase, Try letter practice pages

  • Trace, Erase, Try number practice pages

  • Starting dot and directional guide on each letter and number

  • Trace section for guided practice

  • Erase step to reinforce the same writing path

  • Try section for independent writing practice

  • Blank Trace, Erase, Try template for custom letters or numbers

  • Pages designed to print on standard 8.5 x 11 inch copy paper

How to Use

Choose the letter or number page you want students to practice.

Slide the page into a dry erase pocket.

Students begin in the trace section by starting at the black dot and following the directional guide.

Next, students erase the letter or number using a mini pom-pom, tissue, or other erasing tool. Teach them to erase by following the same path they used when writing.

Then students move to the try section and write the letter or number on their own, starting at the black dot.

Use the blank template if you want to write in your own custom letters, numbers, or practice targets.

Prep Tip

Print the pages on standard 8.5 x 11 inch paper and place them in dry erase pockets for repeated use. Keep dry erase markers and a small erasing tool, such as a mini pom-pom or tissue, nearby so students can complete the trace, erase, and try routine independently or with teacher support.

Physical materials such as dry erase pockets, dry erase markers, mini pom-poms, tissues, or other classroom supplies are not included.

Why It Works

Trace, Erase, Try turns handwriting practice into a clear, repeatable routine.

Students do not just trace once and move on. They trace the letter or number, erase it using the same movement path, and then try writing it independently. This gives children repeated practice with directionality, formation, and control in a way that feels interactive and manageable.

This resource helps:

  • Support letter formation practice

  • Support number formation practice

  • Build confidence with early writing

  • Reinforce starting points and directionality

  • Encourage repeated handwriting movements

  • Strengthen fine motor control

  • Make writing practice more interactive

  • Provide a reusable dry erase activity for letters and numbers
