Quick Answer

Flower Investigation is a 28-page preschool science resource for exploring real flowers, discovering plant parts, sorting materials, making flower prints, and observing changes in colored water, and learning what flowering plants need to grow. It includes seven activity signs in full-page and half-page formats, 12 photo word cards in two sizes, reference pages, observation sheets, and a teacher's guide with setup ideas.

Description

Bring fresh flowers to your science table and give children time to notice what makes each one different. A petal, a leaf, a flower center, or a curled edge can become the beginning of a discovery.

Children can look through magnifiers, gently take apart an older blossom, sort the pieces, test the marks flowers make with paint, and arrange stems in containers. A color-changing flower investigation invites them to make predictions and return later to see what happened.

The plant-needs page introduces sunlight, water, air, and soil. A labeled whole-plant picture connects the parts children see in the close-ups, and Care for a Flower invites them to tend a living potted plant over time.

Flower Investigation uses simple picture prompts and hands-on materials. Children can point, show, talk, and draw to share their thinking. Independent reading and writing are not required.

How to Use

Choose one or two activities and gather the materials listed in the teacher's guide. Offer fresh flowers for observing and arranging, and older blossoms for taking apart or printing.

Display a full-page sign or cut the half-page versions for smaller trays. Use bowls for sorting real petals, leaves, and stem pieces so children have room to handle and regroup their materials.

Display word cards beside materials, use them for matching, or place them on a ring for children to flip through. The four-per-page cards are rotated on the sheet so each cut card has a portrait format.

Add a potted flowering plant and use the care sign to guide ongoing observation. Follow its care label for light and watering needs.

Set up the color-changing flower activity with an adult and return to it over time. Invite children to draw what they notice on the observation sheet; an adult may record their words. Writing is optional.
