Food Investigation
Food Investigation
Quick Answer
Food Investigation is a printable preschool science resource for exploring familiar foods through observation, seed discoveries, peel comparisons, printing, and changes over time. The resource includes picture vocabulary cards, visual prompts, observation sheets, and a teacher’s guide to help you prepare hands-on experiences for your group.
Description
Food Investigation brings familiar produce to the science table for a closer look. Children explore what foods look like inside, compare peels, find seeds, notice smells, and use cut surfaces to make prints.
The emphasis is on investigating real materials. Children can describe differences, sort what they find, and compare freshly cut food with food cut earlier without needing to complete a written response.
The activity signs are reusable prompts to place beside real materials. Children investigate with the materials; they do not need to write answers on the signs. Full-page and half-page options let you choose a size that fits your table, tray, or classroom display.
Use this resource for science centers, small group investigations, classroom theme activities, or homeschool preschool. You can offer one setup at a time and return to familiar activities as children develop new questions.
What’s Inside
This resource includes:
Food Investigation display and 12 picture word cards (four and two per page)
Six full-page and half-page activity signs: Look Inside, Find the Seeds, Explore the Peels, Smell and Compare, Make a Print, and Watch It Change
Full-page Seeds and Peels mats; Freshly Cut and Cut Earlier labels
Half-page observation sheets and teacher's guide with setup ideas
How to Use
Choose a small selection of washed produce and have an adult prepare the pieces. Set out one tray with its activity sign, magnifiers, and appropriate tools. Begin with Look Inside or Explore the Peels.
Use the Seeds and Peels mats beside collection trays. Compare foods with Smell and Compare, try Make a Print, or label samples Freshly Cut and Cut Earlier for Watch It Change. Keep investigation materials separate from food intended for eating.
Display a few picture word cards beside the materials, or laminate, hole-punch, and place them on a ring for children to flip through. Use the words during conversations about what children notice.
Offer the half-page observation sheets when children want to draw their discoveries. Writing is optional; an adult can record a child’s words. Follow the included teacher’s guide for setup ideas and adapt materials and supervision to your group.
Why It Works
Children have concrete materials and visible actions to connect with new ideas. Repeating an investigation gives them opportunities to compare results, describe changes, and try another approach.
This resource helps:
Encourage close observation of familiar foods
Build vocabulary for textures, seeds, peels, and changes
Support sorting and comparison
Give children several ways to communicate discoveries
Support conversation and observation without requiring written answers
Give teachers flexible visual prompts for different setups
