Snow Investigation

Snow Investigation
Quick Answer
Snow Investigation is a 27-page preschool science resource for exploring real snow through observation, building, melting, color mixing, and simple experiments. It includes seven activity signs in full-page and half-page formats, 12 picture word cards in two sizes, reference pages, comparison labels, a teacher's guide, and My Snow Observation drawing sheets.
Description
Bring winter discoveries to your science table with real snow and simple classroom tools. Children can examine snow closely, pack it into cups, make tracks, build structures, watch it melt, test a way to help it last longer, and use droppers to mix color into the snow.
Clear picture prompts invite children to try ideas and revisit their discoveries. The activities encourage conversation and exploration without requiring written answers. Use them during a winter theme, science centers, small group investigations, or guided classroom exploration.

How to Use
Choose one or two activities and gather real snow, shallow trays, and the simple materials described in the teacher's guide. Place a full-page or half-page activity sign beside the materials.
Offer magnifiers for looking closely, cups for packing and building, and toy animals or vehicles for making tracks. Return to melting snow over time to notice how it changes.
For Keep It Cold, place equal portions of snow in matching cups. Wrap one cup in a dry cloth and leave the other unwrapped, keeping both tops open. Add the picture labels and compare the snow over time.
For Color the Snow, offer droppers and small cups of cool water tinted with washable liquid watercolor or food coloring. Children add drops to the snow and explore what happens where colors meet.
Display the word cards, use them to label materials, or put them on a ring for children to flip through. Offer My Snow Observation for drawing discoveries. An adult may record children's words; independent writing is optional.
This resource is designed for real snow. Classroom materials are not included.
Why It Works
Snow gives children a material that changes while they explore. They can notice details, try an idea, compare what happens, and return to test something new.
This resource helps children:
Observe and describe textures and changes
Make predictions and test ideas
Compare loose and packed snow
Explore marks, shapes, and structures
Notice melting and investigate ways to slow it
Explore color mixing with droppers
Share discoveries through conversation and drawing

6A. We can observe using our senses and describe what we notice.
6C. We can make predictions about what might happen.
6D. We can test ideas and notice what happened.
6F. We can compare and describe materials and their properties (hard/soft, heavy/light, float/sink, transparent/opaque).
6G. We can observe changes (melting/freezing, mixing, growing, weather changes).
6I. We can build and try solutions to simple problems (design/build/test/improve in play).
