Description

Wow Words helps preschoolers build stronger vocabulary by introducing rich, expressive words that go beyond everyday classroom language.

Each word is paired with a picture to make the meaning easier for young children to understand, discuss, and use in conversation. Words such as astonished, nocturnal, and marvelous give children a chance to hear and practice more descriptive language during stories, group time, classroom conversations, and everyday experiences.

This resource is designed to make vocabulary instruction simple and manageable. Choose one or two words each week, introduce them to your class, and add them to your Wow Words display for continued review. Over time, children begin hearing, noticing, and using more meaningful vocabulary throughout the day.

Please note that this resource does not yet include a comprehensive list of associated books.

How to Use

Choose one or two Wow Words to introduce each week.

Show the word and picture, talk about what the word means, and connect it to a story, classroom moment, real-life experience, or child-friendly example.

Add the selected words to your Wow Words chart or vocabulary display so students can revisit them throughout the week. Encourage children to listen for the words in books, notice when the words apply to real situations, and try using the words during classroom conversations.

You can also use the cards during group time, read-alouds, small groups, language lessons, or quick vocabulary review.

Prep Tip

Print the pages and cut apart the word cards if you want to add individual words to a vocabulary chart or classroom display. Laminate the cards if you want to reuse them throughout the year.
