Alphabet Fishing
Alphabet Fishing
Alphabet Fishing
Quick Answer
Alphabet Fishing is a playful letter matching resource for preschool, Pre-K, and kindergarten. Children catch uppercase and lowercase letter fish and bring them to matching alphabet docks. Familiar mnemonic picture cues help children connect letters with their sounds while fishing adds fine motor practice.
Description
Turn your letter practice into a fishing activity with colorful letter fish, a pond play mat, and alphabet docks.
Choose a few letters your children are learning, place the matching fish on the pond or in a shallow tray, and invite children to catch them. Each dock has a spot for an uppercase fish and a lowercase fish, giving children a clear place to match their catch.
The docks include the same mnemonic picture cues used in our Mnemonic Alphabet Cards. These pictures give children something familiar to remember when recalling a letter’s sound. For example, the apple picture on the A dock connects the letter to the beginning sound in apple.
Use a small net or scoop, or attach metal paper clips to the fish cards and offer a toy magnetic fishing rod. You can also add a recordable button so children can hear a letter name and sound before searching for that fish.
What’s Inside
This 23-page resource includes:
26 alphabet docks with uppercase and lowercase letters and mnemonic picture cues
26 uppercase letter fish
26 lowercase letter fish
4 blank fish for additional letters or repeated letters in names
1 pond play mat
Setup directions and different ways to play
The alphabet docks print two per page, and the fish cards print eight per page. Pages are formatted for 8.5 × 11-inch paper.
How to Use
Print the docks and fish you want to use. Cut apart the docks, then cut the fish into individual cards or around their outlines. Laminate if desired.
Start with two or three letter docks and their matching fish. Place the fish on the pond mat or in a shallow tray.
Invite children to catch a fish, name its letter, and place it over the matching letter on its dock. Talk about the uppercase and lowercase forms as children find both fish for each dock.
To include letter sounds, point to the mnemonic picture cue, name the picture, and model the target sound. Children can repeat the sound as they deliver their fish.
For another way to play, ask children to catch a specific letter or find its uppercase or lowercase partner. Children can also collect the letters in their names, using the blank fish for repeated letters.
An optional recordable button can give children a prompt to hear again as needed, such as “Catch M. M says /m/.”
Keep the fish and docks at the same print scale so the cards fit their spaces. Use dry materials, and supervise play with paper clips and magnetic tools.
Why It Works
Alphabet Fishing gives children a playful reason to look closely at letters, notice their different forms, and connect them with familiar sounds.
Starting with a small selection lets you focus on the letters children are learning. The mnemonic picture cues provide a visual reminder, while catching and placing the fish gives children practice controlling their movements.
