Alphabet Search & Cover

Quick Answer

Alphabet Search & Cover is a hands-on letter recognition resource for preschool, Pre-K, and kindergarten. Children search for uppercase and lowercase letters and cover each match with counters or loose parts. Each mat includes a mnemonic picture cue that gives children something familiar to remember as they connect letters with their sounds.

Description

Give children a letter to look for and invite them to become alphabet detectives.

Alphabet Search & Cover brings letter recognition into a simple, hands-on activity. Children look at the uppercase and lowercase examples at the top, search through the letter circles, and cover each match they find.

The familiar mnemonic picture cues connect this resource with your letter instruction. Naming the picture and practicing its target sound gives children another way to remember the letter.

Add a magnifying glass for pretend detective play, offer counters or loose parts for covering, or place a mat in a reusable sleeve so children can circle their matches with a dry erase marker.

What’s Inside

This 28-page resource includes:

  • 26 full-page alphabet search mats, one for each letter A through Z

  • Uppercase and lowercase letter examples on every mat

  • A mnemonic picture cue on every mat

  • 20 letter circles per mat

  • Six matches per mat: three uppercase and three lowercase

  • Cover page and setup directions

The letter circles measure one inch across when printed at full size.

How to Use

Choose a letter mat and place it in a tray or on a table with six counters or other suitable loose parts.

Look at the letter examples and mnemonic picture cue together. Name the letter, say the picture name, and model the letter sound you are practicing.

Invite children to search through the circles and cover each matching uppercase or lowercase letter. Keep the examples at the top visible so children can refer to them as they work.

For a smaller search, use a sheet of paper to reveal one row at a time. You can also invite children to find only the uppercase letter or only the lowercase letter. Each mat includes three of each.

Add a magnifying glass for pretend detective play or use a recordable button to repeat the letter name, sound, and picture cue.

For another way to play, place the mat in a reusable sleeve and have children circle their matches with a dry erase marker. Clear the counters or erase the circles to use the mat again.

Print full size for one-inch circles, or adjust the print size to fit your materials.

Why It Works

Searching for a letter encourages children to look closely at its shape and compare it with other letters.

The uppercase and lowercase examples remain visible throughout the activity, giving children a reference as they search. Covering each match helps them keep track of what they have found.

Mnemonic picture cues provide a familiar visual connection to letter sounds. Revisit the picture name and sound as part of your letter instruction, then let children practice recognizing the letter through play.
