Alphabet Ice Cream Shop
Alphabet Ice Cream Shop
Quick Answer
Alphabet Ice Cream Shop is a hands-on alphabet resource for preschool, Pre-K, and kindergarten. Children build ice cream cones by matching uppercase and lowercase letter scoops. Each cone mat includes a mnemonic picture cue that gives children something familiar to remember as they connect letters with sounds.
Description
Turn letter review into a little ice cream shop!
Children choose a cone mat, find its uppercase and lowercase letter scoops, and add them to the cone. The familiar mnemonic artwork connects this activity to the Preschool Vibes Mnemonic Alphabet Cards, helping children recall letters and their sounds across different activities.
Start with a few letters you have introduced, use letters from children’s names, or set out a small group of mats for review. Children can build cones independently or take turns placing pretend orders with a friend.
The large scoops have a simple outline for easier cutting. Guide letters sit beside the scoop spaces, leaving room to add Velcro dots without covering the letters.
What’s Inside
This 18-page resource includes:
26 alphabet cone mats with mnemonic picture cues
Two cone mats per page
52 letter scoops, including one uppercase and one lowercase scoop for each letter
Four blank scoops for extra letters
Setup directions and ideas for play
Suggestions for using Velcro dots or magnetic tape
How to Use
Print the cone mats and scoop pages at the same scale so the pieces fit their matching spaces. Cut apart the mats and cut around the scoops. Use cardstock or laminate for repeated use if desired.
Begin with two or three cone mats and their matching scoops. Invite children to find each letter’s uppercase and lowercase forms and place them on the cone.
Point to the mnemonic picture, name it together, and connect it with the letter sound you are practicing. These familiar pictures give children a visual reminder to return to as they learn.
For a reusable matching activity, place a Velcro dot in each blank scoop space and the matching fastener on the back of each scoop. For magnetic play, attach magnetic tape to the backs of the scoops and place the mat on a magnetic surface.
Add pretend play by taking orders. Ask, “Can you make an M cone?” Children can find the pieces, build the cone, and serve their order.
Offer more letters as children become comfortable with the activity.
Why It Works
Building an ice cream cone gives children a playful purpose for looking closely at letters and matching their uppercase and lowercase forms.
The mnemonic picture cues provide a familiar visual connection. When children remember the picture associated with a letter, it can help them recall the sound they have practiced.
