Description

Alphabet Motion Cards give children a simple movement cue for each letter sound, making alphabet practice more active, memorable, and engaging.

The motion-direction cards are designed in a fold-and-laminate format. Students see the letter on one side while the adult can see the motion cue on the other side. This makes it easy to lead quick, consistent practice without having to memorize every motion right away.

Use the cards as you introduce letters, review previously taught letters, practice uppercase and lowercase recognition, or warm up before blending. The simple routine of naming the letter, making the motion, and saying the sound helps children connect what they see, say, hear, and do.

This resource is Orton-Gillingham inspired and uses a multisensory approach, but it is not a full Orton-Gillingham curriculum or complete phonics program.

How to Use

Print, fold, and laminate the motion-direction cards so students see the letter while you see the motion cue.

Introduce your letter of the week, then add that card to a review pile for continued practice. You can alternate review days by using uppercase cards one day and lowercase cards the next.

Use the cards during whole group, small group, centers, transitions, home practice, or as a quick warm-up on your blending board.

Keep the routine short and consistent:

Name the letter.

Make the motion.

Say the sound.

Repeat often so children can build confidence with letter names, letter sounds, and sound-symbol connections.

Prep Tip

Print the motion-direction cards, fold them so the student-facing letter and teacher-facing motion cue line up, then laminate for repeated use. Store the cards on a ring, in a pocket chart, in a small bin, or near your blending board so they are easy to grab for quick review.
