Alphabet Parking Lots
Alphabet Parking Lots
Alphabet Parking Lots
Quick Answer
Alphabet Parking Lots is a hands-on letter matching resource for preschool, Pre-K, and kindergarten. Children drive letter cars into matching parking spaces while practicing letter recognition and uppercase and lowercase matching. Use the printable cars or attach the included small letter labels to real toy cars for rolling play.
Description
Turn children’s interest in cars into a playful opportunity to explore letters.
Alphabet Parking Lots gives children a place to drive, search, match, and park. Set out a parking mat with a few matching cars, and invite children to find where each car belongs.
Begin by matching uppercase letters to uppercase letters or lowercase letters to lowercase letters. When children are ready, switch the cars so they can practice matching uppercase and lowercase partners.
The printable cars can slide along the road and into their spaces. For children who want wheels that roll, attach the small letter labels to toy car roofs with removable tape.
A blank parking mat and blank cars and labels let you choose specific letters, practice names, or add extra copies of familiar letters.
What’s Inside
This 21-page resource includes:
Five uppercase alphabet parking mats
Five lowercase alphabet parking mats
One blank parking mat with six spaces
26 uppercase printable letter cars
26 lowercase printable letter cars
Four blank printable cars
52 small letter labels for toy cars

Cover page and setup directions
Each parking mat has six spaces. The final uppercase and lowercase mats include Y and Z, with the remaining spaces marked closed.
How to Use
Choose a parking mat and set out its matching cars. Start with two or three cars, then add more as children become familiar with the activity.
Invite children to name a letter, find its matching space, and drive the car into place. Use the printable cars as sliding pieces or attach the small labels to real toy cars with removable tape.
For uppercase and lowercase matching, pair uppercase cars with a lowercase mat or lowercase cars with an uppercase mat.
Add letter sound practice by naming a sound you have introduced and inviting children to find the corresponding letter. An optional recordable button can repeat a prompt such as, “Find M. M says /m/.”
Use the blank mat to practice selected letters or the letters in a child’s name. Print extra blank labels for repeated letters, or use two mats for longer names.
For toy car play, print the mats at actual size and check the fit of your cars. Parking spaces measure approximately 2.4 inches wide by 2.8 inches deep. The small letter labels are ½ inch at full size and can be printed smaller or larger to fit your toy car roofs.
For printable car play, keep the mats and cars at the same print scale.
Why It Works
Alphabet Parking Lots gives children a reason to look closely at letters as they play.
Finding a parking space encourages children to compare letter shapes and recognize a match. Switching between uppercase and lowercase cars helps them connect the two forms of each letter.
Driving and parking adds movement to the activity, while the blank materials let you focus on letters that are meaningful to your students.
