Description
Syllable Picture Cards gives children repeated, hands-on practice hearing and counting the beats in words.
Each card includes a picture and word for adult reference, making it easy to guide students as they say the word, clap or tap the syllables, count the parts, and sort the card by the number of syllables they hear.
The included sorting boards help turn the cards into a reusable center or small group activity. Children can sort pictures by 1, 2, 3, or 4 syllables while practicing listening discrimination, oral language, and early literacy skills.
This resource works well for whole group modeling, guided small group practice, sensory table activities, pocket chart sorting, movement-based syllable practice, or independent phonological awareness centers.
Whatβs Inside
This resource includes:
40 square syllable picture cards
Cards sized 2 x 2 inches
Picture and word on each card for adult reference
Independent sorting boards labeled 1, 2, 3, and 4 syllables
Space on boards for Velcro dots, magnets, or reusable attachments
Clean, reusable design for year-round phonological awareness practice
How to Use
Use the cards during large group to model how to hear and count syllables in words.
Say the word aloud, then clap, tap, or stomp each syllable together. Count the number of beats and place the card on the matching sorting board.
Use the cards in small group for guided syllable practice, or place them in a pocket chart so children can sort by the number of syllables.
You can also add the cards to a sensory table with plastic eggs, bins, rice, or other materials for a more hands-on search and sort activity.
For independent center play, use the syllable sorting boards. Children choose a picture card, say the word, count the syllables, and place the card on the matching board.
Prep Tip
Print and laminate the cards and sorting boards for repeated use. Add Velcro dots, magnets, or another reusable attachment option to the sorting boards if you want children to match and remove the cards independently during centers.
Physical materials such as Velcro dots, magnets, plastic eggs, bins, or sensory table filler are not included.
Why It Works
Syllable awareness helps children hear that words are made of smaller sound parts.
When children clap, tap, stomp, count, and sort syllables, they are strengthening phonological awareness, listening discrimination, and early reading readiness skills. This resource keeps syllable practice visual, hands-on, repeatable, and developmentally appropriate for preschool and pre-K.
