Learning About Patterns
Learning About Patterns
Quick Answer
Learning About Patterns is a hands-on, multisensory pattern introduction resource designed to help children notice, say, build, move, hear, and continue simple patterns. Each pattern concept is introduced through clear visuals, teacher language, movement, sound, real-world connections, and quick discussion prompts so students begin to understand that patterns repeat again and again.
Description
Learning About Patterns is part of the Preschool Vibes Learning About series. This series is designed to introduce important early learning concepts through simple visuals, teacher-friendly language, and quick discussion prompts that can be used during large group, small group, morning meeting, or classroom review.
In this resource, children are introduced to patterns in a simple, developmentally appropriate way. Students practice noticing what repeats, saying the pattern out loud, trying the pattern with movement or sound, and talking about what comes next.
Each pattern card includes a student-facing visual page and a matching teacher prompt page. Together, these pages help children build pattern awareness, pattern vocabulary, and early math thinking without needing a long scripted lesson.
What’s Inside
Each pattern card includes two pages:
Page 1: Pattern Visuals
Each student-facing page includes:
Pattern title
Large visual pattern
Simple child-facing prompt, such as “A pattern repeats again and again” or “What comes next?”
Page 2: Pattern Introduction & Meaning
Each teacher prompt page includes:

Try It
Ask
Additional pattern type cards are also included for:
AB Pattern
AAB Pattern
ABB Pattern
ABC Pattern
This resource also includes a How to Use page with simple printing and teaching tips.
How to Use
Use these cards during large group or small group instruction to introduce early patterning skills. Show the visual page first so students can look at the pattern, notice what repeats, and say the pattern together.
Then use the teacher prompt page to guide quick, engaging practice with teacher language, pointing, saying the pattern, trying the pattern with movement or sound, and answering simple questions.
Display both pages together or print them back to back. You can use one card at a time for focused instruction, revisit cards during math review, or keep them near your large group area, math center, small group materials, or classroom rug for quick pattern practice.
Why It Works
Learning About Patterns helps children understand patterns by experiencing them in more than one way.
Students are not just looking at a pattern. They are saying it, pointing to it, moving with it, hearing it, building it, and talking about what comes next. This helps make patterning more concrete and easier for young children to understand.
This resource helps:
Build early pattern awareness and pattern vocabulary
Help children understand that patterns repeat
Support visual, verbal, movement, and sound-based pattern practice
Introduce common pattern types, including AB, AAB, ABB, and ABC
Encourage children to notice, predict, and explain what comes next
Give adults simple teaching prompts without needing a scripted lesson
