Quick Answer

Turn a piece of paper into a storytelling surprise! Visual Craft Stories includes nine teacher-led activities for preschoolers and kindergartners ages 3–6. Read the story while folding and cutting construction paper, then unfold it to reveal a surprise shape. Children practice listening, making predictions, recalling details, and retelling as they watch the story take shape.

What’s Inside

A 10-page printable PDF with a teacher overview and nine illustrated stories to enjoy at different times throughout the year:

  • Mouse’s Pumpkin Home — jack-o’-lantern

  • Nell’s Empty Picnic Basket — gingerbread friend

  • Hugo’s Jingle Journey — Christmas tree

  • A Little Room for Everyone — winter hat

  • Milo Makes Room — heart

  • Pippa’s Rainy Surprise — four-leaf clover

  • Pip’s Rainy-Day Rescue — umbrella

  • Dot’s Stubborn Surprise — flower in a pot

  • Clover’s Secret — butterfly

Each story includes bold read-aloud text, simple picture cues, folding and cutting directions, and illustrations of the folded paper and unfolded surprise.

How to Use

Gather construction paper and scissors, and practice the cuts before sharing the story. Read the bold words aloud while following the directions and holding the paper as shown. Pause along the way to invite predictions, then unfold the paper for the big reveal!

Afterward, use the finished shape to revisit the characters and talk about what happened first, next, and last. Use these stories during circle time, small groups, or seasonal lessons.

Why It Works

The changing paper gives children a visual connection to the story. Each cut builds curiosity and gives them another detail to notice. The final reveal creates an opportunity to talk about their predictions, recall what happened, and retell the story together.
