Five Senses Investigation

Five Senses Investigation
Quick Answer
Five Senses Investigation is a 24-page preschool science resource that invites children to look closely, listen, explore familiar smells, compare textures, and describe what they notice. It includes six activity signs in full-page and half-page formats, 12 photo word cards in two sizes, reference pages, observation sheets, and a teacher's guide. An optional tasting activity is designed for use with an adult.
Description
Turn familiar classroom materials into opportunities for observation and conversation. Children can investigate a leaf with a magnifier, compare the sounds of a bell and shaker, notice the scent of orange peel, and explore how a sponge and rock feel.
Five Senses Investigation offers flexible prompts for science tables, small groups, and classroom exploration. Children can point, show, talk, or draw to share their discoveries. The activities do not require independent writing.
The Our Senses reference page introduces five familiar ways to explore. Explore an Orange shows how children can learn about one object in several ways.

How to Use
Print the signs you want to use and gather the materials described in the teacher's guide. Display one or two activities at a time. Use full-page signs for a larger display or cut the half-page sheets for smaller trays.
Use picture cards beside materials, for matching, or on a ring children can flip through. The four-per-page cards are turned on the sheet so each cut card is upright in a portrait format.
Invite children to draw a discovery on the observation sheet. An adult may record their words.
Keep tasting separate from exploration materials. Use familiar, appropriately prepared foods with an adult, check allergies and classroom food rules, and allow children to choose whether to taste.
