Quick Answer

Ocean Investigation is a hands-on preschool science resource that invites children to explore ocean animals, seashells, sand, salt, and moving water. This 29-page printable includes picture references, 12 photo word cards in two sizes, eight investigation signs in full-page and half-page formats, a teacher's guide, and My Ocean Observation drawing sheets.

Description

Bring ocean exploration to your science table with simple materials and inviting picture prompts. Children can look closely at shells, sort their discoveries, make waves, dissolve salt, build a sandy shore, try tools for removing pretend litter from water, and press shells or toy animals into sand or Play-Doh to compare impressions. Wash and Discover invites children to brush empty shells in water and compare their appearance wet and dry.

The cartoon activity signs help children understand what to try, while realistic picture word cards support vocabulary and conversation. Children can revisit each activity, change something, and see what happens. Written answers are not required.

Use this resource during an ocean theme, science centers, small groups, or guided classroom investigations.

How to Use

Choose one or two investigations and gather the materials listed in the teacher's guide. Activities use items such as clean empty seashells, play sand, shallow water trays, bowls, spoons, table salt, magnifiers, tongs, and toy ocean animals.

Place a full-page or half-page sign beside the materials. Invite children to observe, predict, try an idea, and describe what changed. Return to an activity with a different shell, tool, or movement to encourage comparison.

Display the picture word cards, match them to toys and materials, or place them on a ring for children to flip through. Cut the four-card sheets into four equal sections and turn the cards upright.

Offer My Ocean Observation for drawing discoveries. An adult may record a child's words; independent writing is optional. Classroom materials are not included.
