Pinecone Investigation

Quick Answer

Pinecone Investigation is a printable preschool science resource for observing pinecones, testing movement, making dough impressions, painting, and comparing wet and dry changes. The resource includes picture vocabulary cards, visual prompts, observation sheets, and a teacher’s guide to help you prepare hands-on experiences for your group.

Description

Pinecone Investigation gives children several ways to explore the shape and texture of a familiar natural object. They can look closely at scales, try a movement test, make pinecone prints in dough, and investigate painting on an uneven surface.

The wet-and-dry comparison invites children to return to the same pinecone and notice changes. Picture references and matching materials help connect their discoveries with vocabulary.

The activity signs are reusable prompts to place beside real materials. Children investigate with the materials; they do not need to write answers on the signs. Full-page and half-page options let you choose a size that fits your table, tray, or classroom display.

Use this resource for science centers, small group investigations, classroom theme activities, or homeschool preschool. You can offer one setup at a time and return to familiar activities as children develop new questions.

What’s Inside

This resource includes:

  • Pinecone Investigation display; Inside and Outside, Scales and Seeds, and Open and Closed references

  • Watch It Change sequence, matching mat, and cutout cards

  • 16 picture word cards in four-per-page and two-per-page formats

  • Six full-page and half-page activity signs: Observe and Compare, Take a Closer Look, Roll, Slide, or Stay?, Pinecone Prints, Watch It Change, and Pinecone Painting

  • Half-page My Pinecone Observation drawing sheets

  • Teacher's guide with setup ideas

How to Use

Gather a few pinecones and begin with Observe and Compare or Take a Closer Look. Offer magnifiers and a tray, then introduce a ramp, dough, or paint with the matching activity sign.

Use Watch It Change to compare a pinecone before and after water exposure and as it dries again. Revisit over time rather than expecting an immediate result. Use the sequence, matching mat, and cutout cards to discuss what children observed.

Display a few picture word cards beside the materials, or laminate, hole-punch, and place them on a ring for children to flip through. Use the words during conversations about what children notice.

Offer the half-page observation sheets when children want to draw their discoveries. Writing is optional; an adult can record a child’s words. Follow the included teacher’s guide for setup ideas and adapt materials and supervision to your group.

Why It Works

Children have concrete materials and visible actions to connect with new ideas. Repeating an investigation gives them opportunities to compare results, describe changes, and try another approach.

This resource helps:

  • Encourage attention to texture, shape, and detail

  • Connect observations with changes over time

  • Invite predictions and movement tests

  • Combine science with purposeful printing and painting

  • Support conversation and observation without requiring written answers

  • Give teachers flexible visual prompts for different setups
