Quick Answer

Teach everyday safety with Learning About Safety, a preschool resource with simple pictures for children and matching teacher language on the back. Use one pair for a short conversation, model a safe action, and give children a chance to practice. Revisit the pictures during classroom routines and conversations about safety at home and in the community.

What’s Inside

This 18-page US Letter PDF includes a resource overview, a printing guide, and eight front-and-back teaching pairs:

  • Learning About Safety (introduction)

  • Adults Who Help

  • Safety Drills

  • Bus & Road Safety

  • Follow Safety Rules

  • Staying Together

  • Water Safety

  • What Could Happen?

Each pair has a full-page picture front and a matching teacher back with four sections: Teacher Language, Try It Together, Ask, and Teacher Tip. The read-aloud language begins with the same statement children see on the front.

How to Use

  1. Print pages 3–18 double sided in portrait orientation at Actual Size / 100%. Flip on the long edge and test pages 3–4 first.

  2. Show the picture while reading from the matching back. Choose one or two questions so children can point, gesture, act, or speak.

  3. Model a safe action and invite a short practice, such as asking for help, staying together during a pretend store visit, or waiting before approaching pretend water.

  4. Revisit the cards during related classroom routines and outings. Use your school’s established drill and transportation procedures.

You can also print single sided and keep each picture with its teacher page. Print on cardstock or laminate for repeated use.

Why It Works

The pictures give children something concrete to notice while the teacher prompts stay in your hands. Familiar situations connect safety to classroom routines, family outings, and being near water. The What Could Happen? card makes physical cause and effect clear: a sharp knife blade can cut, a hot pan can burn, and toys in a walking path can cause someone to trip and fall. Children connect each situation to a safer response, with adult help and supervision included throughout.

Preschool Vibes Standards

  • 7C. We can follow group rules and begin to understand fairness.

  • 8F. We can practice safe choices and body awareness during play.

  • 8G. We can communicate needs related to health and safety (hurt, thirsty, need help).
