Just a Dot, Not a Lot gives children a practical way to practice one of the most important early classroom art skills: using glue with control.

Young children often squeeze out too much glue when they first begin crafting. This resource uses the simple reminder “just a dot, not a lot” to help students learn that a small amount of glue is enough.

Students decorate the first letter of their name using pre-cut shapes. As they place each shape, they practice using a small dot of glue, strengthening fine motor control while also connecting the activity to their own name.

This resource includes two letter layout options so you can choose the format that best fits your lesson, small group, or name activity.

Left-Side Letter Format

The letter is placed on the far left side of the page, leaving space to write the remaining letters of the student’s name next to it.

Centered Letter Format

The letter is centered on the page, making it a focused activity for decorating the child’s initial letter. You can also have students write or add their full name on the back.

How to Use

Prepare pre-cut shapes ahead of time using shape cutters.

Print the letter page that matches each child’s first initial.

Give students pre-cut shapes and glue.

Teach the rhyme “just a dot, not a lot” before students begin.

Students place a small dot of glue on the page or shape, then add the shape to decorate the first letter of their name.

Use the left-side letter format if you want space for the rest of the child’s name. Use the centered letter format if you want the focus to stay on the initial letter.

Prep Tip
